Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev
was born on March 2, 1931 in Privolnoye, Stavropol province. He
Moscow State University where he graduated in Law.
Mikhail Gorbachev joined
the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1952
and acted as First Secretary of Stavropol City Committee
(1955-1958). He was later elected
to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union
as a Member in 1971. From 1978-1985 he served as Secretary of the
Central Committee with responsibility for agriculture.
From 1985 to 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev was the General Secretary
of the Communist Party.
served as Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1970-1990 and acted as
Chairman for the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Soviet of the
Union in 1984-85. From 1985 to 1990 he was a Member in the Presidium
of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, serving as its President (1989-1990).
He served as President of the USSR in 1990-1991.
Mikhail Gorbachev is married to Raisa Gorbacheva (1953),
has one daughter, and two granddaugthers.
Gorbachev stands for what he calls "democratic socialism"
or "socialism with a human face". He currently heads
the Gorbachev Foundation (since 1992),
International (since 1993), and the Civic Forum movement
(since April 1996).
According to the preliminary results, Gorbachev
finished seventh with 0.5% of the vote cast on June 16.
